Download takes a long time then stops.

You try to download the software but it stops halfway through. And then you get a message saying that you can’t download the software again because

  1. I can only download it three times.
  2. The time limit has run out.

The first thing is, are you on a 'dial-up' connection, or are you on broadband?
On broadband the download time is two minutes and forty seconds, and on dial up it take two hours and forty minutes!
So if you are on dial up, the CD is best for you.
If you are on broadband, it’s worth doing a speed check to see how fast your download connection is.  It should be around 4000 kbps download speed, and 350 kbps upload. To check this, go to http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk
If your download is less than 2000 kbps you should contact your broadband service provider.

Message saying I have used up all my downloads.

There is a limit on the number of times the software can be downloaded (3 downloads). This is a security feature designed to prevent the download link being given away to many people to download.
One single download is all you should need, and once downloaded the installation package is sitting there on your hard drive in case you need to install the software again.
If you know where the installation package you downloaded is, just double click it to re-install the software.
If you don’t know where it is, do this:

For all operating systems except Vista:
Click 'Start' (at the bottom left of your screen)
Then click on 'Search'
Click 'all files and folders'
When the window opens up, in the top box, which says ‘All or part of the file name’ type plumbing_level_2_revision.exe
and then click the ‘search’ button.
This will find the installation package.
When it has found the ‘plumbing_level_2_revision.exe’ file, double click the icon and the installation will start.

For Vista:
Click on the ‘start’ button at the bottom left of your screen.
Then type in; plumbing_level_2_revision.exe
Double click on the icon when it has been found.
I’ve done that and can’t find the installation package.
If you can’t find it, or if your computer has crashed completely and you’ve had to reinstall your windows operating system. Send an email to us at forum@learnatrade.co.uk and if you bought the software at any time during the last 12 months we will generally reactivate the download link.
Please read THIS for conditions of reactivation

There is a time limit on the period in which you can download the software.  This is a security feature designed to prevent the download link being given away to many people to download forever.
If you have previously downloaded successfully, it is very likely that the installation package is sitting there on your hard drive in case you need to install the software again. If you don’t know where it is, do this:

My computer crashed and I lost everthing.

We will usually re-activate your download link within 12 months of purchase.
There are, however, a couple of exceptions.
We'll only do it once.
If you bought the software more than six months ago and there has been a major update of the software, we will ask you to pay a nominal upgrade fee.

To get your software re-activated, send an email to forum@learnatrade.co.uk telling us:
When you first bought it.
The name and email you used when you bought it.

This is not a valid win 32 application

This is a sign that you may have a little bug in your system.
A quick way to check whether it is the software, or your computer, is to take the cd and run it in another computer.  If it works on that one it is your system which is at fault.
How do I cure this problem?
Over a period of time your operating system picks up lots of little errors, bugs, spyware etc. which can give you strange messages when you try to load up the software.
The first thing you should do is to have a good search for any little nasties lurking about in your system.  If you go to http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ you can download a programme called Spybot.   This is a free software pack (although you can make a donation if you want to) which searches out spyware and spying cookies which your normal virus protection programme misses.   Once downloaded and installed, run it, and it will identify anything which shouldn’t be there.

This programme is not compatible with........ whatever

As long as you are not trying to run the software on a MAC, this is usually a sign that you may have a little bug in your system.
A quick way to check whether it is the software, or your computer, is to take the cd and run it in another computer.  If it works on that one it is your system which is at fault.

When I click the Number 1 button I get an error message.

The number 1 button installs the software operating system. If there is a different version on your computer already, or if you have Vista, you will generally get an error message after you click the number 1 button.
In this case, ignore Number 1, and go straight to Number 2, which installs the revision software

I've upgraded to the latest verson of the software and I get an error message

If you've had one of the older versions of the software, you must get rid of all traces of it before you install the new version otherwise the security files from the first version will upset the way the new one works. You may be upgrading to either a 32 bit system, or a 64 bit system.

The new versions of the Plumbing Revision with a product key code starting PR01 or the Core Gas Safety CD starting with GAS2 will now work on both 32 and 64 bit systems.
If you don't know which version you have, click on 'Start' then right click on 'Computer'.
From the drop down menu choose 'Properties'.
When the next window opens, look for the heading 'system' where you will find the line:
System type: and it will have either 32 or 64 bit.

To get rid of an old version of the software, this is what you have to do.

If it's a 32 bit system, do this.
Click on 'Start'
Click on 'Computer'
Double click 'Local disk (C:)
When the next window opens, double click 'Programs' or 'Program files'
In the next window, scroll down to a folder named 'Plumbing Revision' and delete it completely.
Now you can close all the windows.
From the desktop, delete the Plumbing Revision shortcut.
Finally, put your new CD into the disk drive and start all over again with the installation.
If you bought a download, locate the installation package and double click it.

If your system is 64 bit it's a little more complicated because Vista 64 in particular likes to make additional copies of the software for some reason. So what you have to do is this.

Rather than following these instructions, you might like to watch a film showing how it's done.
Click HERE to download and watch the film.
But if you're going to try with out the film........
Click on 'Start'
Click on 'Computer'
Double click 'OS (C:)'
When the next window opens, double click 'Program files (X86)'
In the next window, scroll down to a folder named 'Plumbing Revision' and delete it completely.
Now go back to 'OS (C:) and go down to 'Program files' (no X86 this time)
Once again look for a 'Plumbing Revision' folder and delete it.
Now you can close all the windows.
From the desktop, delete the Plumbing Revision shortcut.
Now what you have to do is search for the stray copies!
Click on 'Start', and in the box at the bottom which says 'Start Search' type in 'Plumbing'
If anything comes up, you need to find out where it's located and delete it.
When there is absolutely nothing left, you can finally, put your new CD into the disk drive and start all over again with the installation.
If you bought a download, locate the installation package and double click it.

I haven’t got internet access to activate the software

You don’t need internet access to activate your software.
You can activate the software using the 'Manual Activation' method.
You can do a manual activation by calling us on 01273 516689.
We are usually around until 6.30 (ish) on weekdays, and quite often on the weekends too.

This is how you do a manual activation.

When you get to the bit where it asks you if you have the internet, click NO, or CANCEL,  or some such thing.  It will then ask if you want to do a manual activation.  You do.
You will then need to put in your Product key which came with the plumbing revision software. This is the long series of numbers and letters.
When you click Next, it will give you an installation code which starts with 42-
By this time you should be on the telephone talking to us.
We put the Product key and the installation code into the system for you, and give you another (very long) activation code.
You type in the activation code and the software is activated.

If you call us for a manual activation and we're not there to take your call, you can get one of your friends who have internet access to do it for you.
What they have to do is log on to www.copyminder.com/activate.php
You then give them the Product key and the 42- number, and they can do it for you.

It wants to connect to the internet every time I use the software.

The security system checks your registration every few days.
This is normal and the way it works.

My software is too big for the screen and I can't see bits of it

What’s happening here is that your monitor display settings are incorrect which will squidge things up a bit.

If you are using VISTA click this link
Vista operating system instructions.

For all other operating systems, do this.
Right click on a blank bit of your desktop.
From the window that pops up, click on 'properties'
When the 'properties' window pops up, click the 'settings' tab.
The screen resolution should be set to 1024 x 768 pixels (before you change it around though, make a note of the original setting so you can go back to them if necessary)
Once it's set to 1024 x 768, go on to the next bit.
On the same settings window you will see at the bottom an 'Advanced' button. Click this and you're presented with an opportunity to change the default Font Size.
On Windows 2000 selecting the Small Font option, saving and restarting the computer, allows your programme to be displayed correctly regardless of the screen resolution chosen.
On Windows XP follow the same procedure but under the Advanced button, select the Normal size (96 DPI) option.
Now click APPLY, then OK, then close all the windows down.
That should do it..
